Peter the Pecker…uh, Peter the Peccary…

The day of departure for our latest adventure is rapidly coming up on me! Don’t worry, Randy and I are still both going; I say “me” because Randy just wanders along, not worrying about much of anything, just enjoying the idea of the trip. He doesn’t have checklists (Nevermind he lived by checklists in his working life as a pilot!), he doesn’t get nervous, he doesn’t worry about hotel reservations. Which mostly means it is I who is frantically updating the checklists and the checklist of our checklists. Can’t forget to bring extra water, snacks, extra car key, lock the house, turn off the house water, forward all our calls to my cell phone, etc., etc., etc...

But, before I can forward all our calls to my cell phone I have to figure out how to get the phone to converse with the car. It’s such a chore to be the electronic guru in our family! Not really, I mostly love all the electronic gadgets we have, at least until they don’t work any more. Then my vocabulary gets tested.

Randy takes care of the big stuff like getting new tires. Apparently the Corvette tires are down to the—whatever it is that tires get down to when you need new ones. You see why he takes care of the big stuff.

We will have to make a bit more room in the Corvette for our (ok, ok, MY) newest passenger/mascot/adult-Flat-Stanley, a little stuffed javelina, AKA a collared peccary named (thank you, I think, Yolanda) Peter the Peccary. I know, I know, he’s not flat. He was given to me by a friend at the Desert Museum in honor of my 20 years of volunteering there. The least I could do is bring him with me on our Route 66 trip! He won’t take up much space.

So, I have hotel reservations for the first few days including either three or (we haven’t decided yet) four days in the Chicago Westin, across the street from what used to be the Hancock Tower (I don’t even want to learn what it’s called now) and home of the Signature on the 95th restaurant where we will have dinner one night.

One of our stops enroute to Chicago will be at the Field of Dreams. We watched the movie the other night and neither of us can understand what all the fuss is about over that movie! But we do want to see the actual Field. Plus our son wants us to buy something for him. Something to do with Jabu from the movie Major League (now THERE’S a movie I can really get into! Watched it at least a half dozen times!).

OK, back to the checklists…
