Skinny friends that are best left alone…

Thursday, September 2, 2021 Starting Day 5

Because we have been working so hard at being tourists, we decided to take a day off, stay in Tulsa for two nights (in a beautiful, new Residence Inn with a kitchen) and just tour around Tulsa for a little while.

There’s a lot more to Tulsa than I ever imagined. Including the fact that we have not escaped the Tucson hot weather. Tulsa had a heat index of 108 today. Actual temperature was 100 but the humidity was brutal. We had fun nonetheless! Including grocery shopping for a spaghetti dinner tonight. Yes, my friends, I am actually willing—nay, happy—to cook dinner. I know, I know, I’m a bit weird.

Forgot to add this picture of a tiny, little critter we saw at the Catoosa Blue Whale yesterday. He (who knows, he/she) was smaller around than my little finger. No idea the species but he wasn’t the least bit afraid of us. Being the good steward of animal life that I am, I declined to pick him up. Although I wanted to!

My skinny little friend.

So, Tulsa. We followed our guidebook and just drove around looking at the sights in the city. The pictures don’t do justice to a very nice—albeit HOT—city!

Randy liked the look of this cathedral.

This is a wonderful bronze at the Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza called "East meets West." Tremendous detail including a smushed grasshopper on the car's grill. You can learn more here.

When I went to take photos of the above East meets West sculpture, Randy had to park in a no-parking zone while I walked up and across a very busy highway for the photos. A very tolerant OK sheriff or police car just ignored Randy (with his out-of-state license) parking where he shouldn’t!

Lots of Route 66 memorials all around the city.

This restored gas station will eventually be part of a Route 66 Village display.

Tulsa’s first 24-hour gas station is called the Blue Dome (3 guesses and the 1st two don't count!). More at this website.

This will also be part of the Route 66 Village. I have two photos because of the guy doing the mowing. He saw us taking photos and moved way out of the way until we were done. Hence the second photo, below.

We, of course, thanked him for making our photo better.

Onward tomorrow to El Reno, via Oklahoma City. Thank you to all who continue to follow my deathless prose! I hope what comes across is how much fun we're having traveling in the slow lane and on the blue roads across our beautiful country.
